Project Description

Location: Augusta, GA
Client: Augusta Aviation Commission
Architect: LPA Group, Inc
Size: 100,000 SF

Augusta Regional Airport project included new construction, demolition and renovation of the existing regional airport. One of the major concerns of the project were logistics as the airport remained completely open to normal activities during the entire construction. To accommodate these needs, McKnight Construction built some of the new buildings and temporary facilities prior to demolition of the old terminal (including asbestos-containing material removal and underground storage tank removal). Special care was also taken to ensure that the excess activity that occurs during Masters Week would not be hindered due to construction, nor would the construction schedule be detained. McKnight Construction carefully screened each subcontractor prior to issuing subcontracts because of the importance of safety and security that is placed when working on an operating airport. McKnight Construction proudly finished this project without any security breaches, time loss accidents, and met each milestone to deliver a quality product on time to the owner.

The terminal consists of approximately 1,000 square feet of basement, 80,500 square feet of ground floor space and 13,000 square feet of second floor space. The second floor is offices and administrative areas. Portions of the administrative areas included Sensitive Compartment Information Facilities or SCIF’s. The new terminal has 8,000 square feet of curb front canopy, brick screen walls and enclosures, landscaping, and an interior and exterior signage and graphics program. New amenities include non-hardstand pavements, utilities, hardstand pavement, curb front renovations, credit card rehabilitation, south side employee parking, north side multi-modal curb and revenue parking expansion. Total building size is 106,708 square feet.

The project also included sustainable construction features complying with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) “Silver “ certifiable, renovation/expansion work within an existing Sensitive Compartment Information Facility (SCIF) area , and portions of the construction process occurred within a high security-controlled area by the FAA.
