Accelerate Augusta

McKnight Construction transformed the iconic I. M. Pei Building into Accelerate Augusta, a modern incubator space for entrepreneurs and small businesses.

Project Highlight

McKnight Construction proudly led the renovation of the I. M. Pei Building in downtown Augusta, repurposing this historic structure into Accelerate Augusta—a collaborative business incubator developed with Augusta Technical College and the Downtown Development Authority. The revitalized facility now offers cutting-edge workspace and essential resources for local entrepreneurs. Supported by federal and local funding, the project strengthened innovation and economic development in the heart of downtown.

Challenge

Each floor had distinct design needs, including one with classified military functions requiring SCIF-level security specifications. The project was supported by a complex mix of funding sources—including federal grants, city and DDA support, and private contributions—which required extensive coordination and phased planning. Renovating a landmark I. M. Pei-designed building in a tight downtown site created logistical and preservation challenges, especially while maintaining accessibility and structural integrity.

Solution

McKnight collaborated intensively with designers and the owner to meet stringent security requirements while maintaining schedule and budget discipline. McKnight executed precise planning and selective demolition to modernize the space without compromising its historic character, ensuring downtown access remained open and operations stayed efficient throughout construction.
