McKnight Construction proudly delivered the new Fairforest Middle School, a state-of-the-art 250,000 SF educational facility in Spartanburg, SC. The two-story campus features specialized learning environments including a media center, science labs, arts spaces, and a fully equipped planetarium and observatory—supported by a durable mix of structural steel and masonry construction. The facility also includes a sports field complex, showcasing McKnight’s ability to deliver both academic and athletic excellence in one cohesive campus.

Challenge

1: The installation of the advanced equipment for the school’s planetarium and observatory was a unique challenge, as McKnight had no prior experience with this specialized technology.

2: The building design called for a complex mix of structural systems, finishes, and exposed elements, requiring tight coordination across trades to maintain quality and consistency.

Solution

1: By applying our 3-part Quality Control process, we held targeted coordination meetings and rigorous submittal reviews to ensure precision during installation. This preparation enabled our team to complete the installation efficiently and successfully—on the first attempt. 1,100 students – designed capacity supporting grades 6–8.

2: McKnight used proactive scheduling, model-based coordination, and daily superintendent walkthroughs to ensure seamless integration of design details and uncompromising craftsmanship throughout the project.
